Our international exchange MIAMI / MIAMI enters its third year by welcoming artist BARRON SHERER from artist-run initiative OBSOLETE MEDIA MIAMI [Florida, USA] to THE WALLS.

Miami, Florida based media artist, Barron Sherer will visit The Walls with recent works examining his social media chronology and tropes. The works’ commonalities are in Sherer’s mashed up arrangement of digital media, pulled off the cloud and presented in concrete and material manners. His video installations conflate psycho-geography and structuralism mashing up pop songs, cinema, location sounds and images using simple formulas to create loaded multi-media missives.

NO CAMERA? NO PROBLEM! 16MM FILM WORKSHOP with BARRON SHERER
Join us for this free half-day workshop lead by visiting Floridian artist Barron Sherer. The workshop will explore the historical context of camera-less film techniques and will result in animations that will be projected on to the big screen (The Walls) as part of the opening night event for MIAMI / MIAMI. Participants will learn and apply historical methods of abstract filmmaking through direct manipulation: scratching and puncturing, painting and drawing, and the chemical alteration of “found footage” emulsion. Later, the group’s work will be digitally scanned and shared for accessibly resulting in the continuation of the MIAMI / MIAMI exchange internationally.

Barron Sherer was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1967 and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in Media Arts. Sherer is a time-based media artist and principal of Obsolete Media Miami (O.M.M.), Sherer’s art practice of altering and repurposing archived films originate from his extensive background as film archivist, researcher and curator. Physical editing and manipulation of orphaned content (found footage) is used to produce time-based media installations which incorporate repurposed sound and images, creating referential works by juxtapositions and chance. His experimental film/video and photography work have been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally, with his most recent installations exhibited at Art Center Berlin (Berlin, Germany); Museo de Arte Moderno in Medellin, Colombia; and Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Lerma Department of Arts and Humanities in Mexico City, Mexico. A 2017 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellow, Sherer co-founded Obsolete Media Miami (O.M.M.), which is a Cannonball Miami and Warhol Foundation supported experimental art project and research studio, and winner of the 2015 Knight Arts Challenge. O.M.M. is an experimental art project functioning as a makerspace for analog media techniques and A/V club with scheduled audiovisual presentations, lectures, performances, collaborations and workshops that showcase obsolete media materials in new contexts.
